Last week, we were given the special opportunity to join University of California Irvine (UCI) Tri Delta sorority in their inspiring Fat Talk Free Week! We were able to reach out and share our mission to more than 500 women in the UCI Greek System! We were also delighted to host a street art workshop at the Tri Delta house where we embraced each woman’s CREATIVY, KINDNESS, and STRENGTH! It was a BEautiful success! Lots of education, tears, laughs and REWRITING! A big shout out to the women of UCI! We couldn't have asked for a better workshop! More pics of the workshop HERE!

Rewrite Beautiful kicked off National Eating Disorder Awareness Week by holding a School Programs at Ensign Jr.High School. Founder, Irvina Kanarek, Creative Director and Founder spoke in the Life Skills classes of Mr. Tucker and Mrs.Wagner. The students heard an eating disorder recovery story, the physical trauma of eating disorders, participated in a Q&A panel and the opportunity to Rewrite Beautiful about themselves!

Then we headed over to Costa Mesa High School to talk with the Cheerleaders! There our Board Member, Robyn Baker joined us to share her own recovery story with the group. The group had great questions to ask Robyn about the disease and her recovery.

We finished off the week with a Street Art Workshop! The workshop was led by another wonderful Board Member, Sunny Siu, MFA! He taugh the workshop using recycled CD's and CD covers as materials! Everyone left knowning where their Creativity, Kindness and Strength lie!

We were stoked to put the Street Art up in front of Newport Harbor High School and have their students also continue our mission to Rewrite Beautiuful!

The Hollywood Beauty Event - March 4th + 5th!

When I first started Rewrite Beautiful friends naturally lumped my project with the other campaigns and non-profits  that stood for “Girl Power”. However, I found myself annoyed slightly irked when people sent me articles about Jr. High School’s holding “No Make-Up Day” or “No looking in the mirror for a month campaign!” or “Let’s be proud of our belly’s and show them off!” I applaud the efforts of other groups who want to empower women to “accept” their bodies the way they are, however it is my belief that this approach is actually sending the wrong message to girls and women. Let me explain, I believe that women would be stronger if they were encouraged to DISCOVER what makes THEM unique and different. If we help them to focus on DISCOVERING their gifts and talents, I think that they would be much less prone to hating their bodies, because their worth would not be in their bra size or the color of their hair. Think about it, how much can a girl hate herself while she's thinking:

"Dang, I just made a bunch of people laugh! I'm funny!"

"I just created that art! I'm talented!"

"I just volunteered my time to that non-profit! I feel good!"

"I just made a meal for my friends! I'm a good cook!"

These thoughts are so positive, that there isn't even any room to focus on hating her body. If anything these little discoveries of creativity and kindness just might take this girl down another path to discover what she truly wants to offer the world. That's what we do at Rewrite Beautiful, we offer a NEW way of thinking about ourselves.

So do you understand why when we say “Down with make-up!” and “Burn our bra’s!” we are focusing on the problem, not the solution?  I'm under the understanding that the entertainment, cosmetic and diet pill industry is HUGE and quite honestly I have spent quite enough years in a love, hate relationship with them. What I have found is no matter what angle you come at it, fighting is exhausting and I'm not stepping into that pit again. Cause, dude I like my life and don't want to spend it fighting with Fortune 500's and giving off  negative ju-ju to all of the people in the 500 mile radius of my house. Instead, I’d like to continue purchasing their very nice mascara that brings out my green eyes and attend their very chic LA Parties and spread the Rewrite Beautiful message! Enter: The Hollywood Beauty Event!

My “make love and not war” propaganda has  led me to an alignment with LAGlow. A team of Celebrity Stylists, Hair + Make-Up artists. Rewrite Beautiful will be joining LAGlow at The Hollywood Beauty Event on April 15th and 16th 2012. This is a two day event that will be training Hollywood’s top beauty professionals about the years upcoming trends, styles and how to perfect their craft from other beauty industry leaders. Rewrite Beautiful will be contributing at the red carpet after party. We will be allowing the 900 stylists to hear our message that beauty is an ACTION of Creativity, Kindness + Strength and providing an art project for them to do at the party to remember what makes each one of them beautiful! *They’ll also get our sweet Rewrite Beautiful Bracelet’s in their Gift Bag’s!

I’m stoked Rewrite Beautiful is going to be apart of The Hollywood Beauty Event! If you’re a Stylist, Hair + Make-Up artists then please consider attending the event and stop by the Rewrite Beautiful table to tell us what makes YOU beautiful! See you there sugar!

In July we hosted TELEIOS, an Art Show that gave local fine artists the opportunity to ‘Rewrite Beautiful’ through their work. The art alone was moving and thought provoking, but we also wanted to give the gallery guests the opportunity to ‘rewrite’ beautiful for themselves. Thus, we gave everyone who entered the TELEIOS show a gallery card that described what the theme of TELEIOS was, a piece of colored paper and a Sharpie marker. We gave them instructions to evaluate the art in the gallery and then come to their own definition of ‘beautiful.’ Here are some of the cards from the wall. Enjoy!

We couldn’t Rewrite Beautiful without their help! Check back for pics on “The most Spooktacular day of the year” Monday, October 31st :)

Hey Beautiful friends!

Lots of workshops in the month of September! We’re stoked to also announce that Rewrite Beautiful is partnering with the California State University, Fullerton's  WoMen's Center! Yeah! Rewrite Beautiful will be leading a Street Art Workshop on Tuesday, September 20th from 12pm to 1:30pm. We will be discussing our message that," Beautiful actually has nothing to do with the way you LOOK; it has to do with the way you ACT. Beauty is found in your actions of Creativity, Kindness and Strength displayed in your community. You can either go along with what everyone else thinks is beautiful, or you can be revolutionary and Rewrite Beautiful." The Street Art will be made with this theme in mind.

Everyone (man/boy/woman/girl/child and seeing eye dog) is welcomed to come and learn about Rewrite Beautiful, Street Art and eating disorders. *The Street Art will be displayed in the CSUF Quad at 1:15pm. To RSVP to the Street Art Workshop please see the Facebook invite HERE.

And If you’d like to help us promote the Street Art Workshop at CSUF and want one of our AWESOME T-Shirts for FREE be sure to email: Irvina@rewritebeautiful.org for details on how to get one!

Keepin’ it Beautiful!
