RWB Volunteers

Rewrite Beautiful is currently testing out our Beautiful Action Club’s with 5 different, beautiful, female gals!  They are the first group to take the Beautiful Action Club curriculum and TEST it out with a group of their friends.  The Beautiful Action Club's will play a huge part in the prevention aspect of Rewrite Beautiful. The curriculum will be centered around how to be Creative, Kind and Strong on a daily basis. We hope that through these club's more girls will be able to call themselves 'beautiful' because they will see it themselves in their action!

We would like to thank our Beautiful Action Club Leaders for being some ambitious and brave chicas who are helping spread Rewrite Beautiful throughout the world! We would like to thank them all here for their help!

Anna!

Hey Beautiful Peeps!

Last Saturday we made some epic Rewrite Beautiful Street Art with a group of women called, Women’s Pride. Women’s Pride is a group of 9 women located in Los Angeles and Orange County, that have been together for over 15 years. They meet-up once a month for 5 hours and do a project that either enhances their lives or the lives of their community. Last Saturday they did BOTH because they brought Rewrite Beautiful in to do a Street Art Workshop with them!

Over the course of the workshop the women heard about the mission and vision of Rewrite Beatuiful from Creative Director + Founder, Irvina. They got to hear a touching and inspiring testimonial from Volunteer, Robyn, were led through a crazy-cool creative experience called Mind-Mapping by the uber talented teacher and Volunteer, Sunny and got to see one of their own, CT become the Paint-Master-V for Volunteer who gave the ladies some creative tools and skills with a sparkly, pink, not too magenta, less rosy paint on top!

The women were touched, inspired and made some gnarly Street Art that we will be showing this:

Rewrite Beautiful would like to say congrats to our Board Secretary, Lindsey Teichman who got accepted to Grad School last week! Lindsey will be studying Global Public Health at Boston University this Fall 2011! Boston is blessed to have this beautiful girl on their turf because not only is Lindsey a smart cookie, but she is one of the kindest people I know.

Lindsey’s road to Grad School began when she visited Uganda “On a hot day in June” ;) (Inside joke). She saw the way the people lived, that their lack of the basic water, food and 25 cent band-aids was devastating their country. She loved the peoples optimism and faith that things would change, but she knew she couldn’t just leave them, she needed to return and do something impact their lives in a strategic way. After doing some research Lindsey discovered that she could help in a big way. Her degree in Public Health will allow her the opportunity to help the people in Africa to help themselves by developing systems with their own resources (in other words to be self-sustaining.)

Lindsey has played a huge part in Rewrite Beautiful. She has helped sculpt the vision, plan events and has even stepped up to be the on-call counselor when things get sticky. We’re so blessed to have this beautiful girl on our team and now Boston is too!

 Keepin’ it Beautiful,

 Irvina

Hey Beautiful Peeps! Do you know what the Rewrite Beautiful Mission Statement is? Check it...

"A revolution to change how girls see beauty in themselves with art for the prevention of eating disorders. Equipping girls to use their creative skills to impact their communities."

Are you thinkin', "What the heck does equipping girls to use their creative skills to impact their communities even mean?" We know...impact...sounds like something written in a memo by the LA County Police department. What we mean though, is pretty simple: Use the skills you have and help out the people in your community. Big, small, no one's measuring, but just the ACT itself is earth shatteringly, devastatingly, jaw droppingly BEAUTIFUL! I mean really, who does anything for free? There has to be a catch right? Volunteering, charity, helping out is BEAUTIFUL because it's what is truly eye catching, it's different, it's unique and it's rare to see it in young girls and young women. But, check out my friend Tirzah she totally gets it! Tirzah made us our new Rewrite Beautiful logo and ain't it amazing! Tirzah is the quintessential Rewrite Beautiful girl because she is a full circle beauty in that she is CREATIVE, KIND and STRONG!

First of all Tirzah is CREATIVE because she used her uber duberly awesome Graphic Design skills to help make this logo for us for no-cha-ching...FREE! Creativity is Beautiful.

Tirzah is KIND because she patiently worked with our Executive Director who kept juggling random and elaborate ideas in front of her 4 different times. But, Tirzah stook by her word to help out our "Beautiful Queen of Creative Tangents" and came up with a winning logo! Kind is Beautiful.

Tirzah is STRONG in that she made an effort and found time to volunteer with Rewrite Beautiful even when she had her own obligations being a Graphic Designer, wife and friend. She cares about changing how girls define beauty and is willing to stand strong and work for it! Strong is Beautiful.

Thanks for being an amazing example of a Rewrite BEAUTIFUL girl Tirzah! We love you!

Tirzah is BEAUTIFUL!

Hey BEAUTIFUL peeps! So this is the Rewrite Beautiful Street Art piece we did with the ladies at Faith Worship Community Church.

Just a little background on this piece of art... Rewrite Beautiful believes that people are alot like art... created to express something BEAUTIFUL.... (yes even art that depicts pain and terror is beautiful...the same way people who are in the throws of pain and terror are still able to exhibit beauty). We believe creating art is a process... just like creating a human being is a processs...

When we created this Street Art for the kiddo's to work on we didn't just say, "Hey that'd be cute! Let's do it!"  No, we said... "Let's try and communicate something profound." Our vision for these pieces are the following:

In this particular piece of art the wood shapes of the typical girl and boy are supposed to catch the viewers eye as we "expect" a girl and boy to look like. The colored stripes over the marked up wood symbolize how we all try to make ourselves look beautiful and strong. The truth is that it’s in the wood, the sketch and the words written by the participants that make this girl and boy beautiful and strong, not the outer shape. The pencil and pastel sketches where we tried to get the proportions of the human correct are still on there and shown with pride. We think there is no need to cover up the markings that make us who we are. Perfection is not beautiful or strong. It is owning the marks and the bruises that are apart of us that make us who we are.

*Note - This is a 2 part series! Double the awesomeness right? Rewrite Beautiful worked with Faith Worship Community Church in Costa Mesa (BTW: they are an amazing bunch of peeps) and did this Street Art project with their youth group. Rewrite Strong is what we did with the boys. Tomorrow we will show you the Rewrite Beautiful piece with did with the ladies.  So stay tuned and enjoy!

How do you communicate to a boy that he is strong outside of his abs, height and muscles? Funny you ask, cause I have the answer!...You bring Rewrite Strong to him and ask him, "What makes you strong?"

Rewrite Beautiful got the opportunity to work with Faith Worship Community Church earlier this month. We originally planned to just do Rewrite Beautiful and have the boys help the girls out with the construction of their own Rewrite Beautiful Street Art pieces but God had a better plan! The awesome Roger Balko of Dedo Frame was totally on board to help cut and construct the girl and boy Street Art pieces I envisioned (and that you see here) and voila... a few cuts, splinters and throwing down the backseat of my Corolla and we have Rewrite Strong up in action!

Rewrite Strong couldn't have happened without Roger, the help of the BEAUTIFUL Krista Palmer who is the Youth Leader with Faith Worship Community Church and Wes who is another awesome leader there. Wes led the boys through the Rewrite Strong lesson.... only a tad different from Rewrite Beautiful... instead of affirming eachother of what they see in the other (the way Rewrite Beautiful does) the boys instead wrote down what they have heard others tell them is STRONG about them. Then they buddied up with another boy and told them their list and asked which statement suited them best.

The outcome... AMAZING! The boys were hyper to Rewrite Strong and actually took longer than the girls because they were so detailed! Check out their amazing Street Art pieces below...

"The STRONGEST man I ever saw was kind and gentle with his Lion's paw" ... I just made that up... Shakespeare who?

Thank you Roger from Dedo Frame for all of your help with these pieces!

The Gypsy Snipers + a few fans ;)

Hello Beautiful! So after the vision for Rewrite Beautiful came to me I emailed a few successful people I knew in the non-profit world and asked if I could get some coffee with them. I wanted their wisdom, their advice and their experience on how to make Rewrite Beautiful into what God intended it to be. The very beautiful, faithful and talented Laura Roebuck of International Princess Project told me something that stuck with me, “Pray for a team to do this with Irvina. You can’t do this alone. You need a strong foundation of people who support you and are just as passionate about the end goal: Stopping Eating Disorders so girls can be the women they were created to be.”

All that to say, we’re still building our foundation here at Rewrite Beautiful. Right now we’re like a newborn baby just learning to distinguish between all the beautiful colors in the world, but you guys want us to be a teenager with the strength to go skateboard across country and go do some gnarly street art in every state on the way to New York! I love your visions!  I truly wish we could do that (even though I always fall flat on my booty when I skateboard and take a few scars home) but these situations are why we have VALUES. I have to follow the Rewrite Beautiful values… one of them being… HONESTY…. And in all HONESTY… at this point Rewrite Beautiful isn’t financially or physically capable to carry the load of all the beautiful visions everyone emails, texts and facebooks me to do….. Infants don’t even know how to text! They’re so lucky ;)  We are still growing, but we will get there. I have faith that we will.

In the meantime, there are people (or Gypsies I might say) who have taken it upon themselves to get Rewrite Beautiful out in the world. The Gypsy Snipers is a book club I belong to. The leader of our group, the beautiful Jamie took me to tea one day and said, “I want our book club to help Rewrite Beautiful…. I have an idea.” Her idea was that each girl in our book club of about 14 + girls would draw numbers from a hat. The girls with matching numbers would go to coffee, lunch or on a walk together and get to know the things that make the other BEAUTIFUL… then the girls would go home and do a piece of Rewrite Beautiful Street Art for the other and put it in public. This was also a great way for all the girls to get to know eachother.... having been together for over a year there were still pockets of girls who hadn't gotten the chance to connect with others on a deeper level.

The Gypsies honored their word and there is now Rewrite Beautiful Street Art in the Newport Beach Back Bay, Maui and the Bay Area. My hope in this post is that all of you that care about Rewrite Beautiful would gather a group together and see how you too can CHANGE HOW GIRLS SEE BEAUTY IN THEMSELVES on a local level. I would also ask that if you are a believer in God or a power greater than yourself that you pray for a team to come along side me and help build Rewrite Beautiful up.

My own life experiences have sculpted me into a “Solo Act” if you will. A lot of the time I feel I can do life on my own and I’m better off that way. Life and Rewrite Beautiful have taught me huge lessons that though taking initiative and being strong are BEAUTIFUL aspects of me I need people who are equally passionate about the same things I am passionate about to do this deal with me.

I’d like to thank the Gypsy Snipers for “doing the deal” for getting out there, laying the foundation and being a part of my "team." But, mostly for sharing their abundance of love with me. The Gypsy Snipers aren’t simply a book club full of deep conversation, wine, cheese and the occasional Alta gossip… (Though those things are fabulous in small doses ;) )...To me the Gypsy Snipers are a group of women who see me for the good, the bad and the complicated….they rub my back, they dry my tears and they look me in the eye and say, “I love you…. How can I help?” These women inspire me to be the BEAUTIFUL woman I was created to be… I hope they do the same for you.

These are a few of the Gypsy Snipers Rewrite Beautiful Street Art pieces so far….
