BEAUTY

I have the honor and privilege of writing for Lifestyle  + Charity Magazine. The mission of the magazine is to make giving apart of your lifestyle. How BEAUTIFUL is that?! They provide everything your favorite magazines provides: dining, fashion, entertainment, politics, news, trends…EXCEPT everything has a charity twist! Every article you read and product you see either is giving money directly to a charity or raising awareness for them!

I write the TRUE BEAUTY column for the magazine and this month I wrote on Discovering your TRUE BEAUTY. Check out the article below:

Discover Your True Beauty

By: Irvina Kanarek of Lifstyle + Charity

I was just thinking, it’s pretty bizarre that I write a TRUE BEAUTY column.  The name of the column itself indicates that the world is so saturated with FALSE BEAUTY that we need to designate a place where the truth can be found – weird, right? I think so.

This week I read an article that said, “Girls with eating disorders and low self-esteem spend more time watching television than girls who are secure and have a healthy confidence.” I imagine there are two ways of looking at this statistic. On one hand, you could argue that it’s the amount of media a girl consumes leads to her poor self-esteem and fuels her eating disorder. On the other hand, you could argue that her eating disorder encourages her to isolate which leads to TV watching. I can’t see which side has more points on the score board, they both seem to be losing teams. What I do know is whether or not you struggle with an eating disorder, the world is lacking TRUE BEAUTY and  desperately needs your TRUE BEAUTY in it! But, here’s the catch: your TRUE BEAUTY can’t  be shared if you can’t recognize it. So, what is your TRUE BEAUTY? Not sure? No sweat – I didn’t know for awhile either. TRUE BEAUTY is what you’re passionate about, it’s what gets you excited, smiling and your heart pumping. Some call it: “the desires of your heart.”

Hey Beautiful friends!

Lots of workshops in the month of September! We’re stoked to also announce that Rewrite Beautiful is partnering with the California State University, Fullerton's  WoMen's Center! Yeah! Rewrite Beautiful will be leading a Street Art Workshop on Tuesday, September 20th from 12pm to 1:30pm. We will be discussing our message that," Beautiful actually has nothing to do with the way you LOOK; it has to do with the way you ACT. Beauty is found in your actions of Creativity, Kindness and Strength displayed in your community. You can either go along with what everyone else thinks is beautiful, or you can be revolutionary and Rewrite Beautiful." The Street Art will be made with this theme in mind.

Everyone (man/boy/woman/girl/child and seeing eye dog) is welcomed to come and learn about Rewrite Beautiful, Street Art and eating disorders. *The Street Art will be displayed in the CSUF Quad at 1:15pm. To RSVP to the Street Art Workshop please see the Facebook invite HERE.

We’re proud to announce that Rewrite Beautiful is planning a Street Art Workshop on Saturday, September 10th with two prestigious local rehabilitation clinics, Sober Living by the Sea and The Victorian –Eating Disorder Treatment. Fifteen women in treatment for drug, alcohol and eating disorder addictions will participate in a revolutionary workshop that will change how they see beauty in themselves.

We’re stoked the rehabs are having us! This is the first time rehabs have asked us to come to their facilities! As well, The Victorian has been very supportive and was one of our sponsors for Rewrite Beautiful’s 1st Annual  Art Show – TELEIOS.

Right now we’re gessoing wood, finalizing volunteers and lesson plans. We’ll be sure to show some pictures as soon as were done! Check back soon!

A few weeks ago Rewrite Beautiful was invited to join Redemption Church at ‘Party on the Block’. Party on the Block is a ministry of Redemption that goes to Shalimar Street in Costa Mesa, CA and literally brings church to about 50 at-risk kids and families. The usual ‘party routine’ Redemption hosts is lunch, a bible story teaching and fun! Bringing Rewrite Beautiful into the mix made things a little different for everyone. So we whipped out our spray can of CREATIVITY and got crackin’!

* Rewrite Beautiful is not a ‘Christian organization’ but, quite a few of our volunteers are big fans of Mr.Jesus….hmmmm….

Creative Solution: We decided to do this Street Art Workshop around the Bible Story of Esther. Which would still give the kiddo’s their Sunday Bible story AND get to hear the Rewrite Beautiful message that beauty is in your Creativity, Kindness and Strength!

*Rewrite Beautiful USUALLY uses Street Art in all of our workshops, but when kids create something they want to take it home….hmmm….

Creative Solution: So many Rewrite Beautiful Workshop participants rave about how amazing it is to make Street Art and know that their art is going to be seen by tons of people. However, since the whole point of Rewrite Beautiful is to CHANGE how YOU see beauty in yourself we thought the message would sink in more for the kids if they got to take something home. Therefore we created masks: “Fake Masks.” The masks played into the story of Esther and how she was ‘fake’ about who she was. We had the kids draw on the masks their ‘fake self’ who they really aren’t but act like, (For example: Hitting their sister, stealing, cussing. This isn’t who they were created to be.) Then we had the kids take off their “fake selves” and reveal their ‘true BEAUTIFUL selves’ in a mirror. It was EPIC!  The kids REALLY got it.

*Rewrite Beautiful usually had everyone collaborate on ONE piece of art, but we have 50 kids….hmmm….

Creative Solution: In order to save time and precious money from our donors we decided to Go Green! And create masks out of old cereal boxes.

It was a long process, but it was totally worth it to watch the kids write/draw about their ‘fake self’ and reveal their ‘true BEAUTIFUL selves’

Rewriting Beautiful on Shalimar Street

Creativity is Beautiful :)

Our Street Art Workshop Leader Sunny Siu even made a mask of his ‘fake self”. He’s a pretty strong guy underneath though.

Sunny Siu, Street Art Workshop Leader

Thank you Sunny and Michelle! You're BEAUTIFUL!

He lead an amazing workshop with Michelle McCormick. Check back soon for more pictures from this awesome workshop! And don’t forget to Go Green! And Keep it BEATUIFUL!

Some of Rewrite Beautiful's dearest friend's are ever/after, a premium lifestyle clothing brand that donates 25% of the cost of your item to the cause of your choice. Choose a cause. Change the Story. Currently ever/after is devoted to using 25% of their profits to changing children's lives through three charities and their kindness has paid off because they are now being carried by Barneys New York ! Such a milestone for both companies! We love how ever/after uses Creativity, Kindness and Strength in all aspects of their business and we love that Barney's New York recognizes what a outstanding brand ever/after is and will be sharing them with all of their patrons!

Check out www.everafterclothing.com for their Fall styles! We already picked up some sweatshirts for ourselves and some baby clothes for our expecting friends from Sleepy Dreamer!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support Rewrite Beautiful's 1st Annual Art Show : TELEIOS . For those who missed it, here is a little recap of the BEAUTY of the night....

Everyone was welcomed to CHANGE how they see beauty in themselves and others through viewing the art that was created with the Rewrite Beautiful Vision in mind: "Girls and women are beautiful for their ACTIONS of Creativity, Kindness and Strength."

People were asked to go through the gallery and ask themselves 4 Questions:

1.) Pick an element of the art work that you like most and draw it on your square

2.) Think of a woman that has qualities that are beautiful write down those qualities on your square

3.) If you could choose one quality that the media would consider beautiful what would it be?

4.) What quality makes you beautiful?

Check out how many people responded to the artwork from TELEIOS!

We love reading their answers...

So many BEAUTIFUL artists from Orange County, California participated in creating art work for the show. Thank you!

Happy Friday beautiful peeps!

I don’t know about you, but I so don’t dig hearing about eating disorders in the news cause I feel like only half the story is told. I feel like 97% of the time it’s about some celebrity that’s lookin’ a little bony or has gained some weight, but nobody ever talks about what an eating disorder is, how deadly they are or how to get help. It bums me out because eating disorders are a real, gnarly disease, that shouldn't be treated like an entertaining high speed pursuit that’s just fun to watch and poke fun at. So NOT cool in the Rewrite Beautiful school! But, then there are people like Jacinthe Veillette a  19 year old from Quebec, Canada that makes some beautiful changes around town!

Jacinthe has personally struggled with anorexia, but instead of letting the disease kill her, she fought it for herself and still fights it for others. Jacinthe has made body image and eating disorder awareness her personal mission on this earth, which is why this CREATIVE, KIND and STRONG girl is our Beautiful Girl of the Week!

Jacinthe used her CREATIVITY while sharing her personal experiences with an eating disorder, then went a step further: She created a petition denouncing homogeneous standards of beauty in fashion and the media.

Jacinthe collected more than 2,000 signatures and submitted the petition to the provincial minister responsible for the status of women. This resulted in the ministry creating a charter in 2009 encouraging healthy and diverse body images, and Jacinthe was asked to help create a website and to be the spokesperson for the charter! Sounds like a STRONG chick to us!

Today, she feels there is more discussion about body image issues and eating disorders, at least in Quebec.

Jacinthe not only invests in eating disorder awareness, but this KIND girl also has a heart for bringing her talents to use with Marche Mondiale des Femmes, an international movement to improve the condition of women, fundraising to help children with cancer and international humanitarian efforts in Africa (BTW: What is up with so many of our Beautiful Girls of the Week being obsessed with Africa! i.e. Mary and Lindsey. I’ve never been, but it must be a beautiful country, cause it has some beautiful girls that care about it!) . Jacinthe hopes to one day enter the field of Social Work. In the meantime she still travels to schools, colleges and universities talking about eating disorders and beauty. We’re not sure exactly what she says in her native tongue of French, but we’re pretty sure that whatever it is, it doesn’t change the fact that this young lady is a BEAUTIFUL girl! Thank you for BEING beautiful Jacinthe!

Keepin’ it Beautiful!
