Men with Eating Disorders

Hey BEAUTIFUL peeps! So this is the Rewrite Beautiful Street Art piece we did with the ladies at Faith Worship Community Church.

Just a little background on this piece of art... Rewrite Beautiful believes that people are alot like art... created to express something BEAUTIFUL.... (yes even art that depicts pain and terror is beautiful...the same way people who are in the throws of pain and terror are still able to exhibit beauty). We believe creating art is a process... just like creating a human being is a processs...

When we created this Street Art for the kiddo's to work on we didn't just say, "Hey that'd be cute! Let's do it!"  No, we said... "Let's try and communicate something profound." Our vision for these pieces are the following:

In this particular piece of art the wood shapes of the typical girl and boy are supposed to catch the viewers eye as we "expect" a girl and boy to look like. The colored stripes over the marked up wood symbolize how we all try to make ourselves look beautiful and strong. The truth is that it’s in the wood, the sketch and the words written by the participants that make this girl and boy beautiful and strong, not the outer shape. The pencil and pastel sketches where we tried to get the proportions of the human correct are still on there and shown with pride. We think there is no need to cover up the markings that make us who we are. Perfection is not beautiful or strong. It is owning the marks and the bruises that are apart of us that make us who we are.

*Note - This is a 2 part series! Double the awesomeness right? Rewrite Beautiful worked with Faith Worship Community Church in Costa Mesa (BTW: they are an amazing bunch of peeps) and did this Street Art project with their youth group. Rewrite Strong is what we did with the boys. Tomorrow we will show you the Rewrite Beautiful piece with did with the ladies.  So stay tuned and enjoy!

How do you communicate to a boy that he is strong outside of his abs, height and muscles? Funny you ask, cause I have the answer!...You bring Rewrite Strong to him and ask him, "What makes you strong?"

Rewrite Beautiful got the opportunity to work with Faith Worship Community Church earlier this month. We originally planned to just do Rewrite Beautiful and have the boys help the girls out with the construction of their own Rewrite Beautiful Street Art pieces but God had a better plan! The awesome Roger Balko of Dedo Frame was totally on board to help cut and construct the girl and boy Street Art pieces I envisioned (and that you see here) and voila... a few cuts, splinters and throwing down the backseat of my Corolla and we have Rewrite Strong up in action!

Rewrite Strong couldn't have happened without Roger, the help of the BEAUTIFUL Krista Palmer who is the Youth Leader with Faith Worship Community Church and Wes who is another awesome leader there. Wes led the boys through the Rewrite Strong lesson.... only a tad different from Rewrite Beautiful... instead of affirming eachother of what they see in the other (the way Rewrite Beautiful does) the boys instead wrote down what they have heard others tell them is STRONG about them. Then they buddied up with another boy and told them their list and asked which statement suited them best.

The outcome... AMAZING! The boys were hyper to Rewrite Strong and actually took longer than the girls because they were so detailed! Check out their amazing Street Art pieces below...

"The STRONGEST man I ever saw was kind and gentle with his Lion's paw" ... I just made that up... Shakespeare who?

Thank you Roger from Dedo Frame for all of your help with these pieces!

Hey ya'll! I've been spending alot of time networking with people and trying to get the word out there about REWRITE BEAUTIFUL. I have found that when I explain that REWRITE BEAUTIFUL is changing how women see beauty in themselves using Street Art I hear an overwhelming amount of men say, "I wish you did this for boys too. We really need it. You would be surprised how many men struggle with body image issues."

Believe me, I know the stats state that there is 8 million people in the United States suffering from an Eating Disorder, and of that number 10% are men. (It's estimated that the percentage suffering that are men is far higher, but because of the old fashioned idea that this disease strikes only women, few men come forward to find the help they deserve.) Though at this time REWRITE BEAUTIFUL has our hands full just helping women change the way they see beauty in themselves we want to do something for the "Beautiful Boys" out there. We also hope to implement some programs for the lads once we get the programs rolling for all the ladies...as the old saying goes, "Ladies first." ;)

In the meantime I'd like to give some props to some very awesome and "Beautiful" men who have helped REWRITE BEAUTIFUL over the past couple months. Without their donation of time and talents we might still be sitting on the idea and not in action. Just like women, beauty in men doesn't have to do with their bulging biceps, rock hard abs or chiseled face, BEAUTIFUL is found in the way they give of their time to charity, speak respectfully to their wives, run their business with honesty and live out their faith with humility. Yes these guys are all hansom but it’s who they are that makes them Beautiful People that we are proud to work with.
